Sky to launch new Sky+HD Digibox

September 23, 2009

We have it from a very reliable source that Sky will launch a new Sky+HD Digibox early in 2010. The unit seen in action is manufactured by Amstrad, which of course is now part of the BSkyB franchise.

In terms of looks the design is exactly the same, though the overall size is much smaller than the current bulky model; but the key change is the internals, with a number of undisclosed modified parts and a larger 500GB hard drive.

It is believed that the hard drive will be split down the middle; half retained by Sky, and the other half for personal storage space, which should mean that 250GB equates to approx. 125 hours of standard definition, or 65 hours of high definition. The large volume of retained HDD capacity by Sky would suggest they are planning to launch a number of additional features and services.

Whilst we don’t have any confirmation yet on other manufacturers, we do believe that both Pace and Samsung are in long-term contracts with Sky so it is likely they will also be offering the same specification, though neither were able to comment at this time.

  1. Hello actually sky are going to update all sky HD boxed in February 2010 to get the 3d channels not new sky HD boxes.

  2. I think you will find Dhiren that this is a Sky website and all information on here is official! You will find Sky are correct and your not! :)

Anyways its nice to be informed that new boxes are coming out next year and demand in the market for new ways of Broadcasting content is good news.

  3. drx890
    - no second scart
    - no bank card reader
    - smaller by about 30%
    = 500 GB HDD

  4. The new box is out, my daughter had one installed recently. Not sure about any internal details. But 250gb available for user use and much smaller box

  5. drx890 is smaller higher capacity, AND it works a whole lot quicker than the old box’s response time on remote and channel change is a lot quicker! With the Majority of people going for a Hd tv now the 2nd scart removal i think was a good idea!Hopefully with the new internals and being designed and built by Sky thenselves the Teething problems from the other box’s should be a thing of the past

  6. But have sky learned to program yet?

And will they do anything about the boxes that were working mostly OK until sky broke them with the HD EPG?

  7. the big question for me is have they fixed the known issues with the lipsync??

  8. I just had the DRX890 put in as part of a repair call out……my HDMI splitter now does not work with this unit, and Sky have also removed the Component output facility…………..no advancements as far as I am concerned…but it might be a better box otherwise?
